Fresno to Seattle was up 30¢ to $2.80/mile. Reefer load counts got a big boost along the Mexican border in Nogales, AZ and McAllen, TX. Reefer rates on the lane from Sacramento to Portland soared 70¢ to $3.42/mile. Sacramento to Denver gained 29¢ at $2.55/mile. Chicago to Kansas City also had a big increase at $3.48/mile,

Projections for Central California produce are still strong for June, so we’re keeping an eye on the Fresno market, but those shipping gaps meant that rates didn’t continue their upward trend on many of the top reefer lanes. Meanwhile, the bulk of California freight has yet to hit the spot market.

While the Lakeland, FL market was a big winner last week — gaining over 20% more volume — those gains were more than offset by a week-over-week slump in other major reefer markets, including Fresno, Nogales, Boise and much of the Midwest. The net result was that prices dropped 3¢ in March compared to the February average.

A 23% increase in loads moved out of Fresno was led by a surge of freight on the lane from there to Seattle, coupled with a 17-cent boost to the average rate per mile. Fresno to Seattle gained 17¢ to $2.57/mi. Load-to-truck ratios stayed low for reefer freight last week, despite an increase in volume out of California and Arizona.

Fresno volumes were up, but other parts of California went softer. Fresno to Seattle lost 18¢ to $2.36/mi. That's not a high ratio, but at least loads were moving. Fresno volumes were down unexpectedly, and so were load counts out of the Ontario market in Southern California and along the border in Nogales, AZ. Out West, Fresno to Denver lane rates two weeks ago, but fell 56¢ last week, to an average of $2.58 The last time it was that high was in August 2015.

We did get the expected bump in rates out of Fresno though, and California produce shipments are expected to remain strong at least until the 4th of July. A few lanes out of California crossed the $3 mark: The biggest jump in price was on the lane from Fresno to Denver , which surged 61¢ to $3.14/mile.

Just like with vans, inbound reefer rates could go up this week in regions affected by Hurricane Matthew.

HOT MARKETS - There was an increase in loads moving out of Fresno last week, which is a welcome change. Fresno had been a little disappointing until now, but it may yet produce the post-drought volumes of fruit and vegetables that we’ve been hoping for. McAllen , TX also got a boost, likely from cross-border traffic.
